Nadia Petkova: Aeon Student-Athlete Spotlight

Nadia Petkova: Aeon Student-Athlete Spotlight

Nadia Petkova is a competitive rhythmic gymnast in the Class of 2028 who trains full-time in Bulgaria while completing her studies at Aeon, a flexible online high school built for students like her. We sat down with Nadia to hear how she balances elite athletics with rigorous academics — and why an online school for student-athletes made all the difference. Aeon's accredited curriculum meant Nadia didn't have to trade academic credentials for athletic opportunity — her transcript carries the same weight as any traditional school.

Nadia’s story reflects the commitment, maturity, and resilience required to chase a high-performance athletic path while continuing to grow academically. Her experience offers a clear look into how Aeon supports students whose lives are shaped by intense training, international opportunities, and ambitious long-term goals.

A Life Built Around Rhythmic Gymnastics

For Nadia, rhythmic gymnastics has been part of her life for as long as she can remember.

She has been training for more than 10 years, beginning when she was very young and steadily building toward a highly competitive future in the sport.

What she loves most is the ability to express herself through performance while showing the amount of discipline and work that goes into every routine.

“I love being able to express myself and to show everyone how much training and work goes into it.”

That passion now shapes nearly every part of her daily life.

Nadia trains in the morning and early afternoon, often beginning around 8:00 AM and continuing until 3:00 PM. Her days are filled with warmups, routines, element work, repetition, correction, and the constant pursuit of precision.

She is currently competing in Category A and preparing for a national competition, with the goal of qualifying for elite and eventually earning a place on Bulgaria’s national team.

Finding the Right Academic Fit

Before joining Aeon, Nadia attended an in-person private school.

As her gymnastics path became more serious, the traditional school model became increasingly difficult to balance with her training demands.

Her practice was an hour away from school, which often meant doing homework in the car on the way to training and again on the way home. The schedule was packed, stressful, and difficult to sustain.

“It was just kind of messy and very complicated”

Eventually, Nadia and her family realized that if she wanted to fully pursue rhythmic gymnastics, she needed a school model that could support that level of commitment.

That decision ultimately led her to Aeon.

“I chose to go to Aeon because of its flexibility and because it’s a great school.”

For Nadia, the ability to complete schoolwork at the right time, in the right setting, and around her training schedule has made all the difference.

A Model That Supports Ambition

One of the defining aspects of Nadia’s experience at Aeon is the ability to pursue rigorous academics without being held back by a rigid school structure.

Her schedule is anything but traditional. She trains for hours each day, lives internationally, manages a significant time zone difference, and competes during an intense season that can include around eight national competitions between January and June.

Aeon gives her the ability to keep progressing academically while staying fully committed to her sport.

“It’s very nice to just be able to do my work wherever I am.”

For Nadia, that flexibility has reduced the stress that used to come with missing school, gathering materials, notifying teachers, and trying to manage academic expectations around competition travel.

At Aeon, she can take her laptop with her, work from wherever she is, and stay on track without having to choose between school and gymnastics.

Flexibility Without Sacrificing Rigor

While Aeon gives Nadia the flexibility she needs, she is clear that the academic experience remains challenging.

The work feels different from her previous school, and in many ways, more advanced. Aeon’s model asks students to think deeply, manage their time, and take real ownership of their learning.

“It feels more advanced and it’s challenging.”

That balance is a major part of what makes Aeon distinct.

The flexibility does not lower the standard. Instead, it allows students like Nadia to meet a high standard in a way that fits the reality of their lives.

For a student-athlete training internationally and chasing elite goals, that distinction matters.

Personalized Support That Makes the Difference

A major part of Nadia’s success at Aeon has been the support of her dean.

For student-athletes living nontraditional lives, that individualized guidance matters. Nadia’s dean has helped her think through her academic path, future goals, and the classes that will best support where she wants to go.

“My dean has been amazing and has guided me through a lot.”

Nadia is already thinking seriously about her future beyond gymnastics. She is interested in medicine and hopes to one day help other athletes.

Her dean has helped her begin shaping that vision into a plan.

This is one of the most important parts of the Aeon experience. Students are not just completing classes. They are being guided as whole people, with their academic goals, personal growth, and future aspirations all taken seriously.

A Community of Driven Students

Although Nadia’s school experience is flexible and online, she has still found real connection within the Aeon community.

She describes her classmates as dedicated, smart, kind, and helpful. The students around her are motivated and supportive, which makes the environment feel meaningful even from a distance.

“We all try to help each other out, and it’s a very nice community to be a part of.”

Nadia has also formed close friendships at Aeon, and  feels connected because her classmates share similar qualities and values.

That sense of community is an important part of her experience. Aeon gives students flexibility, but it also gives them access to peers who understand ambition, independence, and the drive to pursue something deeply.

Adapting to a New Life

Nadia’s move from New York to Bulgaria was a major transition.

She had spent time training in Bulgaria during the summer and realized that if she wanted to continue progressing in rhythmic gymnastics, she would need to be in an environment where she could train with greater intensity.

In Bulgaria, she is able to train as much as she needs. The rhythm of life is different, but over time, she has adapted.

“It was kind of difficult to adjust, but I think that when you get used to it, you’re able to just go with it.”

That ability to adapt is part of what makes Nadia’s story so powerful. She has embraced a completely new lifestyle in pursuit of her goals, and Aeon has helped make that pursuit sustainable.

Advice for Other Student-Athletes

For athletes who are considering a move to an online school model, Nadia’s advice is clear.

“If you’re really passionate about your sport, I think you’ll have no problem adjusting. The live classes and dean support is something that only Aeon has”

She acknowledges that the transition can feel unfamiliar at first. It is a different concept and a different rhythm from traditional school. But for students who are motivated by the opportunity to focus more deeply on their goals, the model can open doors.

The Aeon Model in Action

What stands out most about Nadia’s story is the level of commitment she brings to every part of her life.

She is not simply balancing school and sport. She is building a life around excellence, discipline, and purpose.

Aeon gives her the structure, flexibility, community, and support to pursue that life fully.

She can train internationally, compete at a high level, continue rigorous academics, explore future career interests, and grow into a more independent young person along the way.

That is what Aeon is designed to make possible.

For student-athletes like Nadia, it creates the space to pursue big goals without compromising education, growth, or future opportunity.
